In memory of Janet M. Atwell and her husband, Curtis J. Atwell
Monaca, PA – The Community College of Beaver County (CCBC) community celebrated the dedication of the Atwell Student Commons on Monday, October 14, in memory of Janet M. Atwell and her husband Curtis J. Atwell. Through Mrs. Atwell’s estate, she has provided the largest unrestricted individual gift to the CCBC Foundation, to date totaling $477,000.
“Her contribution celebrates a space where students can gather, collaborate, and grow and will support a campus that fosters learning, connection, and a sense of community. The Foundation is honored to accept this incredible gift on behalf of the College – a gift that names this space and leaves a lasting impact for future generations of Titans,” stated Laura McGortey, vice chair of the CCBC Foundation.
Mrs. Atwell was a CCBC alumna, Beaver County resident, and life-long learner. Both she and Curtis spent a lifetime promoting the value of learning for their family and community. They strongly believed that everyone deserves and should pursue an education.
Several individuals spoke at the dedication ceremony including:
- Laura McGortey, Vice Chair – CCBC Foundation
- Harry Kunselman, Chair – CCBC Board of Trustees
- Austyne Mann – CCBC Student and Student Government Association Secretary
- Robert Youkers – Family friend and executor of the estate – Joined by his wife Nancy Ottaviani
- Dr. Roger W. Davis – CCBC President
On August 20, 2024, the CCBC Board of Trustees approved a resolution naming the Student Life area the Atwell Student Commons. We are incredibly proud that Mrs. Atwell chose CCBC to carry on her legacy of lifelong learning.
“We thank the Atwells for investing in our campus, our students, and all that CCBC represents. We also thank Mr. Youkers and his wife, Nancy, for the important role they’ve played in carrying out Mrs. Atwell’s wishes. They are now a part of our CCBC Titan Family and are always welcome here,” said Dr. Roger W. Davis, president of CCBC.
