Spanish for First Responders Training Program in Partnership with Beaver County Emergency Services
Monaca, PA – Community College of Beaver County (CCBC) is proud to announce the launch of its first-ever Spanish for First Responders training program in collaboration with Beaver County Emergency Services and the Beaver County Sheriff’s Office. The six-week program is designed to help emergency responders communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking individuals during emergencies—by asking critical questions, understanding responses, and providing clear instructions in Spanish.
“Patrick Young, Chief of Detectives and Emergency Services Unit Commander from Beaver County Emergency Services, approached the college’s School of Industrial Technology and Continuing Education (ITCE) about customizing English as a Second Language training for local police, firefighters, and EMTs,” explained Maria Brown, acting dean of the school of ITCE. “Detective Young and Sheriff Guy emphasized the growing need for first responders who can issue basic commands in Spanish during emergencies, ensuring the safety of everyone in our communities.”
The training takes place in three distinct six-week sessions, with in-person classes held twice a week for two hours at Beaver County Emergency Services. The class capacity is 30 students.
The first session focuses on police officers, followed by sessions for firefighters and EMTs. Participants will learn key components of the Spanish language, including how to ask essential emergency assessment questions, give instructions, and offer reassurance to victims and their families. The aim is to equip first responders with the skills to handle delicate situations with compassion, integrity, and confidence.
“The goal is to save the lives of both first responders and innocent people, and this course will empower them to protect and serve more effectively,” said instructor Barbara Hopkins. “I’m enjoying teaching this material and am learning just as much about law enforcement as the participants are learning about Spanish.”
The first section of training for police officers is underway Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. through February 19.
